The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) also called the Mooncake Festival is the second most important festival in China after the Lunar New Year. This festival is widely celebrated in other parts of Asia such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and among Chinese communities around the world. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration of the harvesting of rice and crops. It is also the time of the year when families and loved ones gather together in a reunion dinner, admiring the full moon, kids making and playing around with colourful paper lanterns, eating delicious mooncakes and sipping tea. Riddles are also shared and played among the scholars back in the ancient times for a bit of fun. I’ve made the snow skin mooncake with taro and purple sweeet potato and mango coconut jelly mooncake earlier, so this is my rendition of another healthier version of jelly mooncake using Osmanthus and goji berries.

Mooncake is a typical snack made and eaten during this festive and comes in many different forms, shapes and flavours. Mooncakes are also presented to relatives, family members, friends and business clients and partners as a form of appreciation and best wishes. The earlier versions of mooncakes are baked are typically baked and contains higher amount of sugar and calories. This jelly mooncake recipe is ideal for people who is trying to omit all the unhealthy components in their diet. Using only five ingredients – agar agar powder, water, honey rock sugar (can be substituted with Monk fruit golden sweetener making it even healthier since it’s sugar-free), goji berries and Osmanthus tea leaves. The mooncake mould I used is a 2-inch diameter x 1-inch height mould which are readily available in most baking ingredient shops in Asia.

It has a very unique peachy floral aroma and a slight sweet flavour, even without adding sugar. This caffeine-free floral tea has an intense yellow golden colour which gives the jelly mooncake its golden yellowish tint when used together with the goji berries and honey rock sugar.
