I had the chance to go on a sailing trip to various Greek islands, spending 9 days with newly made friends, cooking on the boat as well as eating with the locals on Greek islands. One thing about the Greek cuisine is that the food looks so humbly prepared and presented, yet tastes so fresh and delicious. A Greek friend then taught me how she makes the Greek Tzatziki with really simple ingredients:

  • 2 cups Greek yoghurt (Greek yoghurt might not be available in all supermarkets so you can also make do with Greek styled yoghurt)
  • 1 Japanese cucumber, peeled and grated (I love using the Japanese cucumber in almost every other dishes I make as I find Japanese cucumbers really crisp and subtly sweet to taste)
  • 1/2 lemon, freshly squeezed juice
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and grated
  • 1/3 tsp Himalayan pink salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly crushed
ingredients for Tzatziki

Making it is so super easy and quick to make in less than 30 minutes. Here’s a quick guide of the steps.

  • Peel & remove the middle seed portion of cucumber. Grate cucumber and squeeze excess water out of the grated cucumber as much as possible.
  • Peel and grate garlic.
  • Assemble the ingredients by mixing Greek yoghurt, grated cucumber and garlic, pepper, salt, olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Mix well into a consistent mixture. Keep chilled in the refrigerator.

This Greek Tzatziki is really versatile. Serve it with pita bread in gyros, dip it with chips or crackers (my favourite), spread it over fish or any grilled meat, or just use it as a spread in sandwiches. I also serve it very often during my home parties as I can prepare it a day in advance and my friends love dipping chips in it.
